Italian Asiago Cheese Makers Launch Online Campaign

Through a variety of social media tools, including Facebook and Twitter, plus an electronic newsletter and an increasingly informative Web site, the Consortium hopes to educate buyers and sellers of cheese in the United States about the special qualities of Asiago cheese PDO (protected designation of origin) and why they should buy the real thing, not imitations from other countries.

The Consortium believes American consumers will benefit by being able to find this special cheese in more locations and in more restaurants. Two types of Asiago PDO are available – fresh cheese made from whole cow’s milk, aged less than three months, and mature Asiago, made from skim cow’s milk and ripened from 3-12 months. Each has a distinctive flavor and texture.

Among the U.S. retailers that carry Asiago PDO are Bristol Farms, a leading southern California grocery retailer of gourmet, organic, and natural foods; Texas-based Central Market, offering foodies a sumptuous selection of food and wine from around the world; Philadelphia gourmet retailer Di Bruno Brothers; Michigan gourmet market Vince and Joe's; Forever Cheese at several U.S. locations; Murray’s Cheese in New York; and Walmart, the world’s largest retailer.

Asiago PDO cheese comes only from cows raised in the pastures of Italy’s Po River Valley and its Alpine meadows, in the regions of Vicenza, Trento, Padova and Treviso.

The European Union’s PDO designation guarantees the quality, safety, and geographic authenticity of all raw materials used in the cheese and that all production follows rigorous standards.
