Next Generation Of Cheesemaker Takes Over At Lively Run Dairy

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The next generation of artisan cheesemakers has been named at Lively Run Dairy in Interlaken. Pete Messmer will take over crafting cheese from his mother, Susanne Messmer. While growing up, the 27-year-old has worked at the goat dairy since his parents, Steve and Susanne, purchased it in 1995.

Studying English education at Ithaca College, Messmer had planned to become an English teacher when he graduated in 2010. The poor economy derailed those plans. So he continued making cheese as he had throughout his summers while in college.

"I started developing a big interest and kind of really getting involved in trying to make the cheese better, trying to improve our process," he said. Messmer has worked to make the dairy operation more efficient and experimented with new cheeses. He introduced Finger Lakes Gold, a hard goat cheese, in 2012.
