Deli sandwiches are in demand at grocery delis. Despite a 2.8% decline in repeat sales from the previous year, national sandwich sales increased 5.4%.
• Deli sandwiches are reported as the fourth largest contributor to prepared food sales, with 17% of U.S. households purchasing.

• 75.4% of operators are experiencing growth in deli sales
• Deli operators ranked the following as the largest areas for improvement in delis for 2014:
Sandwiches 59.6%; Rotisserie programs 56.8%; Daily specials 51.6%; Staff training 50.4%

Driven by gains in prepared food sales, overall foodservice increased to nearly 25 percent of total in-store gross margin dollars. Convenience stores are attracting more on-the-go women, especially for immediate-consumption occasions. Features particularly appealing for women are: family-sized food selections, new product selections and quick in-and-out service.

The convenience store market also captures a large share of millennials’ wallets. Their buying behavior makes them an ideal c-store target audience because they are more impulsive, spend more than the older generation, make more unplanned purchases and they seek immediate gratification.
