Shatto Milk Company Cheese Amongst Best At World-Renown Cheese Competition

Shatto Milk Company’s Farmstead Cheeses are quickly making a name for themselves after the local family farm completed its state of the art cheese making facility earlier this year. Shatto Milk Company’s “Plattsburg” cheese was named third in the Farmstead Cheese Class – Open Category Cows Milk Cheeses (aged over 60 days) during the 27th Annual American Cheese Society Conference and Competition. This cheese is a gouda style cheese named after a small town near their family dairy farm. Many cheese makers around the world name cheeses after towns, landmarks, and families near their cheese making operation.

“We are humbled by such an award as the American Cheese Society is the leading authority on cheese in America. We never thought our cheeses would be amongst the best in the world within such a short period of time.” Said the Shatto Family. “It is our cows that deserve the credit as we truly believe good cheese is only possible with outstanding milk.” Shatto Milk products have received many international awards including just last year Shatto Root Beer Milk received 1st place, strawberry milk 2nd place and their 2% white milk 2nd place at the World Dairy Exposition, which is held annually in Madison, Wisconsin. The competition brings in products from around the world.

Visitors that stop in to the country store or that take part in a tour, can view the cheese making room from their new on farm retail store and ice cream bar.

(Farmstead Cheese is cheese made with milk from herds on the farm where the cheeses are produced.)

The American Cheese Society (ACS) is the leading organization supporting the understanding, appreciation, and promotion of farmstead, artisan and specialty cheeses produced in the Americas. Since its founding in 1983, ACS proudly hosts North America’s foremost annual educational conference and world-renowned cheese judging competition.

More than 750 individuals attended the 2011 conference in Montreal – the first ever held outside of the United States. The 2011 Judging and Competition saw a record number of entries: 1676 cheeses and cultured milk products from 258 different companies in the United States, Mexico and Canada.

Shatto Milk Company is a small family dairy farm located 30 miles north of Kansas City. They began bottling their world famous milk on the farm in June 2003, and just opened their state of the art cheese making facility on the farm in March of this year. They currently make cheese curds as well as a variety of aged farmstead cheeses that are available for sale at the farm as well as at select grocery stores in the Kansas City and St. Joseph areas.
