Customers And Flexibility Drive Family Farming

KANSAS CITY, Kan.—The U.S. Department of Labor tells Future Farmers of America to consider going into horticulture: flowers, landscape plants, fruits, vegetables, grapes, and even wine-making.

John and Karen Pendleton's family farm naturally moved into larger scale plant cultivation after making a habit of listening to their customers. Pendleton said customers want to get fresh vegetables, bedding plants, cut flowers, and pumpkins from a local farmer from April to November. In December, people want to buy leftover cut flowers dried and hand-arranged, and jams and pickled vegetables for holiday gifts.

The Pendletons should know. They have been listening to customers for over 30 years on their small family farm. It is a few miles east of Lawrence, Kansas, home of the state’s longest-running farmers market and the University of Kansas.
