Cut Flower Growers Announce 2013 Scholarship Winner

The Association of Specialty Cut Flower Growers (ASCFG) has selected a recipient of its Dave Dowling Scholarship.

An excellent grade point average, a wide range of extra-curricular and academic activities, and years of experience on a large commercial cut flower farm earned Janos Arnosky of Wimberley, Texas the 2013 Scholarship.

Janos is a junior majoring in horticultural sciences at Texas A & M University. He’s been involved with the university’s Horticulture Club and the American Society for Horticultural Science. He obtained his private pilot license when he was a freshman, and is currently working on his instrument flight rating.

Janos’ plans include study at the Universidad de San Francisco in Quito, Ecuador, where he’ll attend classes and tour cut flower operations. Given his years of experience on his family’s cut flower farm in Texas, the Ecuadorian growers will learn as much from him as he will learn from them.

The ASCFG Dave Dowling Scholarship is named for a cut flower grower in Maryland. Dave Dowling is a long-time member of the ASCFG, has served on its board as a Regional Director and President, and has hosted several meetings at his Farmhouse Flowers and Plants. He is known for his encouragement and involvement of students and other young farmers in the cut flower industry. The Scholarship was named after him to recognize his contributions to the Association, and to the cut flower industry.

The ASCFG is a trade association which provides production and marketing information to commercial cut flower growers in the United States and Canada. Its goal is to unite growers of specialty cuts produced in the field, greenhouse or hoophouse, and sold to wholesalers, retailers or directly to consumers at farmers’ markets.
