Flower Grower Finds Profit By Going ‘Lean’

Bob Echter never thought something as simple as how often he picks his daisies could make such a difference for his business.

But Echter, owner of Dramm & Echter Inc., a flower farm in Encinitas, is learning that small changes, pursued under the waste-eliminating management discipline known as "lean," can add up quickly.

At the height of the recession in 2008, Dramm & Echter was barely breaking even.

"Flowers are used in events and used for gifts, and all those segments of the economy were down some because of the recession," he said.

Echter worried that his business, which was started by his father 37 years ago, might have to cut health benefits or lay off some of its 120 employees.
