Groton, MA Students Create Floral Arrangements As Part Of Special-Ed Program

GROTON — Andrew Young gently places a yellow mum in a bud vase while his classmate, Chase Hertog, carefully snips an iris stem.

Cutting the stem to the right length is important because it makes the brightly colored blossom stand out in a crowd of tender green leaves. Hertog may not tell you it's a rule, but he knows it by heart.

After all, he and his three classmates in Paula Bye's special-education class at Groton-Dunstable Regional High School have entertained the eyes of the customers at Main Street Café in downtown by making 18-bud vase arrangements each week since the fall.

Putting flowers together is fun, Hertog said. And watching others admire his work is even more enjoyable.
