Lenten Roses Offer Growers Many Options

Even before the first wave of spring flowers – daffodils, cherries and magnolias – the Lenten rose appeared in full bloom. Some opened a few weeks ago.

The name of this lovely, semi-evergreen perennial, Lenten rose, is apt in one way, a stretch in another. Its bloom season coincides with Lent, typically between late winter and early spring.

But this is no rose. It is not even a member of the rose family of plants, but the flowers resemble five-petaled roses in shape. And instead of being borne on woody canes, they open at the top of soft stems.
