New Flower Carpet Rose Sure To Make A Splash, More Fairy Magnolias On Tap For 2013

For spring 2013, Tesselaar Plants is thinking pink.

That’s when the international plant marketer will introduce Pink Splash, the newest addition to the Flower Carpet family of groundcover roses. It’s also when Tesselaar’s grower partners will offer increased availability of another pink-flowered favorite – Fairy Magnolia Blush.

Flower Carpet Pink Splash, with light-pink petals splattered a fun, hot pink, will be offered initially along the West Coast through three Tesselaar-licensed growers: Monrovia, Color Spot Nurseries and Village Nurseries. Expanded availability nationwide is planned for 2014.

“With a color combination that demands a tiara, Pink Splash will definitely look like a diva – but not act like one,” says Anthony Tesselaar, cofounder and president of Tesselaar Plants. “That’s because it’s part of the Flower Carpet line, the groundcover roses with the most All-Deutschland Rose designations – the world’s highest honor for natural disease resistance.”

Pink Splash (variety name ‘Noasplash’) is most similar in form and performance to Flower Carpet Pink and Flower Carpet Appleblossom. Like them, Pink Splash thrives in all but the hottest zones (5-10).

Speaking of pink, Tesselaar’s grower partners are also answering the demand for more Fairy Magnolia Blush – a spring-blooming, evergreen magnolia with fragrant, lilac-pink blooms aging to white. Next spring, it will be more widely available in California, Texas and the Southeast.

“People went crazy went we introduced it two years ago,” says Tesselaar. “Not only was a michelia hybrid something completely unique and different, it had so many applications – as a blooming hedge, as a specimen tree and as a source of fragrance, now so hard to find.”

Both announcements are great news for Catie Anderson, of McMinnville, Oregon – a fan of Flower Carpet roses and Fairy Magnolia Blush.

“My Flower Carpet roses are vigorous and really drought tolerant – way more than all my other roses,” says Anderson, noting just about everything else suffered in her unusually dry, Zone 8a garden this past summer. “The Fairy Magnolias are looking good, too. They do fine with drought, and the deer don’t touch them.”
