In many parts of Asia, the flower industry is taking into account a potential tripling of demand for roses and other cut flowers, now that both Valentine´s Day and Chinese New Year are on the horizon. Things will surely not become that frenzied for florists in the West, but here too, demand is likely to rise in the coming weeks.
Local Malaysian media are reporting that flower growers in the country´s highlands are currently already signaling higher sales, as well as increasing prices. Roses may in fact sell for four times their normal price in the weeks before Valentine´s Day, some retailers indicate. For carnations, the price has about doubled over the past few years.
The fact that Valentine's Day and Chinese New Year are separated by a few days this year, in contrast to 2010 when both fell on the exact same day, is leading sellers to expect even higher sales than in previous years. Bouquets of red roses especially, which are of course always an incredibly desired commodity around Valentine’s, can do no wrong.
