There are not that many blue flowers, but the colour blue is fairly prominent among summer flowers. Veronica is certainly among the bluest!
Veronica blossoms with magnificent spiky clusters of flowers. The florets have an intense blue colour. However, there are also Veronicas with sparkling white and candy pink flowers. Veronica looks magnificent in informal bouquets; the long flower spike can be left protruding, giving your arrangement a cheerful, playful look.
Saint Veronica
Veronica originates from the eastern part of Central Europe. Veronica is allegedly named after Saint Veronica, who took pity on Jesus and dabbed his face with a veil. With a great deal of imagination, the facial traits of Jesus, imprinted on the veil, may also be recognised in the flowers of some Veronica varieties. Another explanation is that Veronica is a corruption of vere unica, i.e. the one true plant. This refers to the medicinal effect once ascribed to Veronica officinalis.
