‘Pink Slime’ No More: USDA Reclassifies Filler as ‘Ground Beef’

It’s the term that launched a multi-billion dollar lawsuit, but the controversial “pink slime” that refers to “lean finely textured beef” has been reclassified by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) as simply “ground beef.”

In 2012, Beef Products, Inc. (BPI), maker of a beef filler known as “lean finely textured beef” (LFTB), filed a defamation suit against ABC News when the media company used the term “pink slime” in a report about the product. The lawsuit was settled in 2017 for more than $177 million, the most ever in a corporate legal case of its kind.

And now the USDA has given its approval for South Dakota-based BPI to call LFTB simply “ground beef.”
