As one of the nation’s top 10 largest poultry processors House of Raeford delivers its product in as many forms as consumers demand: fresh—including whole and boneless—ground, cured and smoked. The company also has extensive processing facilities and makes fully cooked chickens and turkeys whole and proportioned, kitchen-ready and prepared, for retail and food service customers.
With so many different offerings it became important to know what items were selling where and when, with precision, in order to expand market share and grow product lines. Having attempted an in house solution for basic business intelligence that collapsed under the weight of the company’s large data sets, House of Raeford’s Richard Welch saw an article about QlikView that prompted him to look into it.
“Once I saw the possibilities I produced a QlikView document over a weekend and presented it to management along with the time it took to create, from scratch, as a brand-new user of the package,” Welch said. “The ease and speed of creation sold the product.”
Welch, IT Manager for House of Raeford Farms, Inc. Raeford Division, had his first few primary reporting documents set up in QlikView within the first week of purchasing a license. With the largest data set being 2.5 million records, Welch says QlikView helps his organization in so many ways that House of Raeford has doubled the number of licenses and projects doubling the number again next year; he also would like to connect the company’s multiple locations, which will require handling data sets that are likely to be larger than 10 million records.
“Management has found that some views actually provide them with the ability to tell how closely procedures are being followed,” Welch said. Additional benefits have been realized by shifting the sales focus to more profitable items as the market fluctuates.
When asked what the biggest benefit has been Welch says the unplanned gains allowed them to quickly and easily see the data in a meaningful way.
