Safeway & Perdue Chicken Partner To Give Kids A Lift To Camp

WASHINGTON — As school gets out and summer settles in on the nation's capital, kids from all over the greater Washington D.C. area begin to dream of adventure. Many children look forward to leaving their crowded neighborhoods and getting out into the fresh air of the countryside. But, for some kids from low-income families the dream of taking a trip to camp is often just that — a dream.

That's where Perdue Farms has stepped in to help.

This year, as a way to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Annual Safeway National Capital Barbecue Battle and the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Washington, Perdue is launching the Send a Kid to Camp program. With the aim of helping communities help their young people, a portion of proceeds from select PERDUE(R) chicken items sold through participating area Safeway stores will be donated to the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Washington.

"We think this is important," said Andy Urban, Vice President of Retail Sales for Perdue Farms Incorporated. "There are a lot of worthy kids who could benefit from spending time in the great outdoors. And, sometimes all it takes is a little lift to get these young people over the obstacles standing in their way. That's why we're working with the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Washington to help lessen the costs to parents who want their kids to take part in this healthy, educational and oftentimes transformative experience."

The Send a Kid to Camp program runs in participating local Safeway stores from May 29th through June 30th. With every purchase of PERDUE(R) OVEN READY, PERDUE(R) PERFECT PORTIONS(R) Boneless, Skinless Chicken Breasts, PERDUE(R) SHORT CUTS(R) Carved Breast Strips, PERDUE(R) REFRIGERATED BREADED Chicken and PERDUE(R) FROZEN FULLY COOKED Chicken products, Safeway customers will help sponsor a trip to camp for a child in need.

Perdue is proud once again to sponsor the PERDUE(R) Sizzlin Chicken BBQ Contest at the 20th Annual Safeway National Capital Barbecue Battle. New this year is the PERDUE(R) chicken food truck. Attendees are urged to visit the PERDUE(R) chicken food truck, make a donation to the Boys & Girls Club of Greater Washington and pick up a serving of delicious PERDUE(R) chicken. In addition, Perdue Corporate Chef Chris Moyers will be demonstrating two grilling recipes developed especially for this event: Argentinean Chicken with Mint Relish and Jamaican Jerk Chicken Flat Bread.

The 2012 Safeway National Capital Barbecue Battle is held Saturday, June 23rd through Sunday June 24th on Pennsylvania Avenue between 9th and 14th Streets in Washington, D.C.
