Uncle Charley’s Sausage Owners Planning For The Future

Charles S. Armitage and his son, well, you can sure tell they are family.

Both men seem smart, strong-willed and self-confident. One is a charming curmudgeon barreling forward, while the other seems a more deliberate type who studies a problem and carefully plans how to address it. You get the feeling they've bumped heads a few times as the family business has grown into an operation delivering sausage into five states and hundreds of retail stores.

"He's learned most of this from me," says the first.

"I'm sure he bit his tongue a few times," says the second.

Now Charles S. Armitage Jr., 50, who has been with Uncle Charley's Sausage for years and claims to have done every job in the place, has taken on the title of president of the Vandergrift food operation. And his 76-year-old father, the man from whom the company takes its name, is trying to retire.
