Louisiana Farmers Say This Could Be Best Strawberry Crop In Years

PONCHATOULA, LA — A warm, dry January — what Tangipahoa strawberry farmers call "perfect conditions" — is leading to what could be the best strawberry crop in years.

"It's perfect conditions for us strawberry farmers," said eighth generation strawberry farmer Eric Morrow. "It's a little bit cool at night sometimes, then it warms up to 75, 80 degrees during the day. We're putting on a lot of crop."

Morrow is Louisiana's third largest strawberry producer, with 250,000 strawberry plants over 15 acres. "It's nothing but good," Morrow said of the early season weather.

Morrow described the winters of 2010 and 2011 as "brutal," and said his crop is up 40 percent this year. Just as importantly, according to Morrow, the berries are bigger, sweeter and simply tastier than the past two years.
