When Miller Nurseries put its expansive Canandaigua compound on the market in 2013, Heron Hills Winery owner John Ingle urged his friends, Wegmans CEO Danny Wegman and wife, Stency, to take a look.
The West Lake Road property was just down the road from the 50-acre Wegmans Organic Farm, and it was over three times the size. That winter, the couple toured the property and its mature orchards, grapevines, sprawling fields and breathtaking Canandaigua Lake views.
But they toured mostly out of curiosity. They weren’t looking to expand their organic growing to include fruit trees. Stency, who oversees the development and operation of the Organic Farm, turned to her husband at one point and remarked dryly, “The last thing I need is more work.”
