Ex-Randalls Chief Randall Onstead Jr. Is Giving Groceries Another Go With Winn-Dixie

As a boy, Randall Onstead Jr. sacked groceries and cleaned floors at one of the grocery stores in the Randalls chain co-founded by his dad, the late Robert Onstead. He eventually took over the Houston-based business and became well-known around town for his appearances in TV commercials.

After initiating the sale of Randalls to a private-equity firm in 1997, Onstead stayed on as CEO for two years before Safeway acquired it.

Since then, he's served as everything from managing director of an investment banking firm to president and CEO of Garden Ridge.

A few weeks ago, he made a big move in his life. He left Houston for a new challenge as CEO of a Florida-based grocery chain. At his Jacksonville headquarters, he oversees almost 700 supermarkets in eight southeastern states under the names Bi-Lo and Winn-Dixie.
