Giant & Safeway Maintain Their Hold On Washington's Grocery Market

The D.C. region's two most prevalent grocery stores, Giant and Safeway, continued their dominance of the market in 2012, but the influence of non-traditional sellers of grocery items is continuing to increase, according to the latest market study from Food World magazine.

Although Giant closed three stores during the survey period — which goes from April 1, 2012 to March 31, 2013 — it still took the top spot with $3.98 billion in sales last year. That was 22.84 percent of the grocery and drug market.

Food World grades the region's grocery stores alone. The more general Market Leaders ranking paints a more complete picture, as it includes grocery stores, drug and convenience stores, and general merchandise stores that also sell items available in grocery stores.
