Gopher Grocery Injects Technology Into Age-Old Business

William Orkin's bread and butter is bread and butter.

"I have a ubiquitous product," Orkin said. "Everyone eats."

"My mentor in business school said, 'To create a big business, find a problem that all consumers have and solve it with technology.' "

That's exactly what he did. Orkin's company, Gopher Grocery, is built around his online ordering system. Customers choose from more than 12,000 items organized into 35 digital "aisles" and select a one-hour window in which to have their groceries delivered to their doorsteps.

Although online grocery delivery seems like a no-brainer in the age of Amazon and Netflix — and Orkin is quick to admit that he is far from the first entrepreneur to capitalize on the idea — Gopher Grocery
