Harris Teeter, Second Harvest Food Bank Of Metrolina Announce Chef’s Best – Fresh Off The Farm

Charlotte, N.C. – Harris Teeter, Second Harvest Food Bank of Metrolina (SHFBM) and some of Charlotte’s top local chefs are raising awareness for local food and hunger during the Chef’s Best – Fresh off the Farm dinner event at the Charlotte Convention Center Crown Ballroom on Friday, July 27, 2012.

In its 23rd year, Chef’s Best is an evening of gourmet food and entertainment designed to raise money for the Food Bank. Local chefs, Chef Gene Briggs, Blue Restaurant & Bar; Chef Tom Condron, The Liberty; Chef Bruce Moffett, Barringtons Restaurant; and Chef Joe Kindred, Rooster’s Wood-Fired Kitchen are creating a four-course menu using local produce items available in Harris Teeter stores. The International Culinary School at The Art Institute of Charlotte is hosting the reception prior to dinner, and Biltmore Winery, Shelton Vineyards and E&J Gallo Winery are also participating.

Carolina Panthers middle linebacker Jon Beason, a long-time supporter of the Food Bank, is getting involved for the first time, as well. Beason is recreating his favorite childhood dessert that will be sold at both the Morrocroft Harris Teeter and Cotswold Mall Harris Teeter while supplies last, immediately following the event. All proceeds from sales of Beason’s dessert will be donated to SHFBM to support Community Food Rescue (CFR).

Chef’s Best is SHFBM’s annual fundraiser for CFR. Community Food Rescue is a GO GREEN program whereby the Food Bank gathers and distributes perishable foods such as produce, dairy, restaurant and bakery items that might otherwise be thrown away. The food is picked-up daily and delivered at no cost on the same day to agencies that feed on-site. Almost four million pounds of various foods are saved annually through CFR.

Ticket sales are a very important part of raising money for the event, and both Harris Teeter and SHFBM are grateful for the support the community has shown the past 22 years, as well as for the support of some of Charlotte’s top local chefs who are participating.
