Kroger Unlikely To Rescue Jewel After Harris Teeter Acquisition

Those of us hoping Jewel stores might find their way into the hands of a top-notch grocery store operator were disappointed to see Kroger Co. look to the Southeast U.S. for its latest acquisition.

Cincinnati-based Kroger has seemed like a logical candidate to acquire Jewel when private-equity firm Cerberus Capital Management LP is ready to flip the 178-store, Itasca-based chain it acquired in January. After all, the country's largest grocer has shown a strong appetite for buyouts, and metropolitan Chicago is one of the few big gaps in its nationwide operations.

A Kroger buyout could be the cure for Jewel's long-festering woes — mediocre selection, outdated stores, subpar meats and produce, and low-grade store brands. Kroger's stores outclass Jewel on all fronts.
