Lunds & Byerly’s Offering Nutrition Scores

Who has time to read all the nutrition labels on grocery store products? And even if you do, can you really tell what foods are most nutritious?

Lunds and Byerly's recently rolled out a nutritional scoring system designed to help shoppers easily make healthful decisions.

The supermarket chain is the first in the Twin Cities to use NuVal, a science-based rating system that scores products based on more than 30 favorable and unfavorable nutritional factors. Each product is scored on a scale of 1 to 100, with 100 being the most nutritious. Pineapple has a score of 99, shrimp is 75 and Utz Barbecue Potato chips fall nutritionally flat with a score of 4.

"We were looking for a way to add another layer of food expertise to our stores," said Lunds and Byerly's registered dietitian Janice Cox. "Any system that helps people make better-informed food choices, we're all for it."
