Parent Company of Shoppers Plans Sale of D.C.-Baltimore Grocery Chain

The parent company for Shoppers Food & Pharmacy stores plans to sell the grocery chain this year, spurring fears the popular chain could be closing stores in the near future.

Executives with United Natural Foods Inc., which purchased the chain’s previous parent company Supervalu for $2.9 billion last year, plan to sell the chain, according to the Providence, R.I.-based company’s financial filings.

During a March 5 earnings call, United Natural CEO Steve Spinner said that the company is “well down the path on selling Shoppers and I’m confident we’ll get that done in the coming months.”
