Technological Advances Are Forecast To Change Food Retailing

Attention shoppers – forget the public address system touting price discounts at your local food retailer.

Food journalist Phil Lempert is predicting that 2011 is the year your Blackberry or iPad will tell you about personalized bargains while you're loading up your basket or buggy – if you act quickly.

It hearkens to Google's increasingly sophisticated ability to guess what you're typing into a search engine – or the list of 'recommended' books you might see if you're a frequent customer at an online bookseller such as Chapters.Indigo, or Amazon.

Lempert, based in California, sees a transformation in customer service as Food Apps – which can already read bar codes to help you count calories – and pennies – are adopted by retailers to disperse in-store information as well as speed you through checkout.
