Alaska Salmon Group Will Continue Certification Of Harvest

In hopes of retaining a marketing edge for wild-caught Alaska salmon, a Seattle-based fishing organization has proposed to continue the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) certification that tells consumers the harvest is sustainable.

"Fishermen are receiving higher prices for their catch, and proof of sustainability has been a contributing factor," said Bob Kehoe, executive director of the Purse Seine Vessel Owners Association. Kehoe said MSC certification has been an important marketing tool.

In January, another organization — the Alaska Fisheries Development Foundation — announced it would pull out of the MSC program for Alaska salmon, with some member processors citing frustrations with the rising complexities of the certification program.
