Blue Fin Tuna Overfished, Alaskan Salmon, Sardines Better Choices

The huge blue fin tuna that sold for nearly $400,000 at auction in Japan isn't just one of the most prized fish in the world. It's also one of the most threatened seafood species, according to BBC.com.

Tuna populations have decreased dramatically since the mid-1990s, and the blue fin, which is in hot demand among restaurants that specialize in sushi, is in danger of disappearing.

Other species that have been overfished – or are farmed or caught in a way that can harm other marine life — include swordfish, orange roughy and grouper, according to the Monterey Bay Aquarium Seafood Watch.

But there are plenty of fish in the sea that are safe to eat from an environmental standpoint.
