Cooke Aquaculture wants to have farmed salmon swimming in Shelburne County by the spring.
“We’re dealing with biological timelines,” Cooke spokeswoman Nell Halse said in an interview Tuesday.
The New Brunswick-based company’s subsidiary, Kelly Cove Salmon Ltd., has applied to the federal government for approval to build two large salmon farms in Jordan Bay, near Shelburne.
The plan is opposed by traditional fishermen in the area who say the large-scale aquaculture operation will threaten wild fisheries, particularly lobster.
Halse said the federal fisheries, transportation and environmental departments are reviewing the proposal. A recommendation will then be made to the province, which will decide if the development proceeds.
