Fall Shrimp Season Pulls In Optimism In Louisiana

After two poor shrimping seasons and fishing closures that marked the BP oil spill, local shrimpers said they’re feeling optimistic that the fall shrimp season will be bountiful.

The fall shrimp season opened Monday evening in state inshore waters east of the Atchafalaya River, including Terrebonne and Lafourche parishes. Waters west of the river to the Texas state line were opened at 6 a.m. Monday.

The fall shrimp season is a long season, typically opening in mid-August and lasting through December. It’s also when shrimpers catch coveted white shrimp, which can fetch a better price.

“We’re hoping for a good season. We’re trying to stay optimistic,” said Ronnie Anderson, 46, a lifelong shrimper from Montegut. “We’ll catch a few the first few days, and hopefully the price will maintain. We take it day by day.”
