Gulf Reports Disappointing Brown Shrimp Season

The news out of the Gulf of Mexico these days is anything but heartening.

If you need any more evidence of just how disheartening the mood is, look no further than the so-far nonexistent 2010 brown shrimp season.

Ordinarily (and there is nothing ordinary about this year) the season arrives in the first two weeks of June. Sometimes earlier, sometimes later; it all depends on when the maturing shrimp reach a size that are deemed safe to harvest.

Also in ordinary times, the arrival of the briny, brown shrimp in the markets is reason for special rejoicing. These special seasonal visitors to our shores make living here worthwhile and tolerable, especially as the temperatures start to rise.
