Irene's Toll Still Heavy On The Connecticut Oyster Industry

Mystic, Conn. (WTNH) – Stormy weather has taken a big toll on the oyster industry in Connecticut.

Jim Markow doesn't consider himself a fisherman in the traditional sense more of a farmer. "We're at the point now where these ones are close to market size," he said.

Planting and harvesting his crop at the bottom of the Mystic River, and like other farmers, tropical storm Irene wreaked havoc with them.

"What happened was the wave action actually picked the oysters up and brought them up onto the island over here," Markow explained.
