EASTON – Local prices for a bushel of number one crabs likely will remain at more than $100 for Memorial Day weekend as watermen work to supply local markets.
Overall, the crab season that started April 1 is not going well, said Larry Simns, president of the Maryland Watermen's Association.
"We have a lot of little ones, but no big ones," Simns said. "It may get better in the late summer, but I think for the holiday, crabs are going to be scarce and expensive."
Scott Todd, a fifth-generation Dorchester waterman who is president of the Dorchester County Seafood Harvester's Association, said along with not catching much, crab prices dropped recently.
