Mississippi Shrimp Season Opening Nears

BILOXI, Mississippi — The opening of the brown shrimp season in state waters is near with shrimp sizes ranging from 61 to 70 shrimp per pound, according to Traci Floyd, director of the Shrimp and Crab Bureau of the Mississippi Department of Marine Resources.

The state Commission on Marine Resources on Tuesday gave William Walker, DMR executive director, the authority to open the shrimp season when shrimp samples average 68 shrimp per pound, which is the legal opening size.

Floyd said there have been several post-larval peaks in shrimp numbers this year, which has resulted in "some very nice large shrimp," but also shrimp counts in the 140 per pound range.
