Phillips Foods' Ed Rhodes To Lead Seafood Sustainability Session At NACUFS Conference

Baltimore, MD – Phillips Foods is proud to announce Ed Rhodes, Vice President of Sustainability, will lead a Seafood Sustainability Interest Session during the upcoming 2011 National Association of College and University Foodservices (NACUFS) Annual Conference, held in Dallas, Texas from July 13th – 16th.

Open to all NACUFS attendees, the Interest Session will take place on Friday, July 15, 2011 at 2:00 pm. The session will educate attendees on the basics of seafood sustainability, the key criteria of sustainable fisheries (wild-caught and aquaculture), the progress to date in the Southeast Asian crab fishery, and how other industry partners are reacting to the movement. Scott Anderson, Chef/Associate Director at Shepherd University, will moderate the open discussion.
Rhodes was recently promoted to Vice President of Sustainability and Aquaculture Development, reinforcing Phillips Foods’ passionate commitment to the importance of seafood sustainability. “We are honored that NACUFS is addressing the importance of sustainability and allowing Ed to share his decades of expertise with the leaders in the industry,” said company President/CEO Steve Phillips.

Rhodes has worked in aquaculture and fisheries, both on the research side and in commercial production, for over 40 years. Much of the research was with NOAA Fisheries, as he was NOAA’s aquaculture coordinator from 1997 to 2001. Prior to coming to Phillips in 2007, Ed was the executive director of the East Coast Shellfish Growers Association.

Rhodes chairs the NFI Crab Council, a cooperative effort among leading crab importers that funds fisheries improvement projects in source countries. Crab Council members recently agreed to a minimum purchase size for crabs that will go into effect in July 2011.
