Processing Of American Lobster Nothing New To PEI

ALBERTON — The practice of American lobster being shipped into P.E.I. for processing has been going on for decades, says the Province’s manager of Marine Fisheries and Seafood Services.

Processors from P.E.I. bring in about three to four million pounds of live lobster from the United States annually, said Dave McGuire. He said the amount might be lower than that in 2011 as Ocean Choice International is not processing in Souris this year.

Ordinarily, the lobster that comes to P.E.I. from the States is processed here and then shipped back to the U.S., McGuire explained

“It keeps employment going a bit,” he said.
