Recovery Commission Pushes For Seafood Marketing Group

MOBILE, Ala. — A new organization to promote Alabama’s seafood industry could be the first step to creating a regional institution to research and market the fish and shrimp caught and processed across the Gulf Coast region, members of Alabama’s Coastal Recovery Commission said Tuesday.

The commission, which was created by Alabama Gov. Bob Riley about a month ago to create a comprehensive plan to guide the state’s recovery from the Gulf oil spill, took its first real action Tuesday when it called on Riley to create the Alabama Gulf Fisheries Marketing and Promotion Board.

Riley spokesman Todd Stacy said the governor had not seen the specific recommendation yet, but it "sounds like it could be a good idea."

The commission is chaired by Press-Register publisher Ricky Mathews and employs several people with personal ties to Press-Register employees.
