Santa Monica Seafood: FDA Seafood Fraud Concerns Spark Changes In Product Names

We are systematically updating our records so that they are in line with the FDA’s Acceptable Names for seafood. Although we’re all accustomed to many of these names (whether they are common nicknames, market terms or otherwise) if they are not on the list then we’re technically not allowed to use them.

 

As concern about seafood fraud continues to grow, there is the chance that you may also be visited by an FDA inspection team or have questions from your customers. The FDA is not only looking for labeling fraud perpetrated to increase margin (for instance, blatantly substituting a less expensive fish like Tilapia for a more expensive fish like Red Snapper) or also accidental misuse of descriptive names like those mentioned above and potential misrepresentation of the geographic descriptions on your menu.
