Seafood Wholesaler Donates $10,000 To Help Veterans

Groton, CT – Grossman's Seafood donated $10,000 – the profits from its second annual Operation Lobster Dinner – to Work Vessels for Veterans, a non-profit organization that helps veterans returning from active duty.

On July 18, more than 700 people ate at Grossman's, a retail and wholesale vendor that transformed its parking lot into an outdoor eatery. Among the diners was Gov. M. Jodi Rell, who spoke about the importance of serving veterans.

The 2009 dinner raised about $5,800 for Work Vessels for Veterans, which started when John Niekrash, a local lobsterman, helped a returning Marine get his own lobsterboat.

"And it just grew from there," Niekrash said. Since that first donation, in October 2008, Work Vessels for Veterans has helped between 200 and 300 veterans nationwide get everything from laptops to new vehicles to help them further their education or careers.
