Stone Crab Claw Season Starting Soon, Island Crab Company Is Ready

Pine Island, Florida – Stone crab season is just around the corner and the Phelan family is steadily preparing… The owners of Island Crab Company, a seafood wholesaler and distribution facility on Pine Island are also owner/operators of Pinchers Crab Shack, a collection of seven southwest Florida seafood restaurants. As season officially begins, Saturday, October 15th they plan to have claws in all the stores, from Sarasota to south Naples, by 6 p.m. that day.

With “you can’t fake fresh” as their company motto and a focus on quality control, Pinchers Crab Shack is the ideal place to purchase stone crabs. They are the largest retail stone crab purveyor on the West Coast of Florida and the second largest in the country. Based in Southwest Florida, they crab in local Gulf waters.

"We look forward to stone crab season each year and so do our customers," commented Grant Phelan, Director of Operations for the family owned and operated business. “Since we own Island Crab, we’re able to serve claws on the 15th when many other restaurants can’t.”

Stone crab claws are the only renewable resource from the water. Crabbers take only one claw from each crab, which is then regenerated over time. Claws must be a minimum of 2.75 inches long to harvest and are measured from the elbow joint to the tip. Season runs from October 15th until May 15th annually.
