Tuna Packer Hopes Success Is In The Bag

Tuna in a can? That's so last-century.

Mike Babcock hopes Oregon Seafoods LLC can create new markets for Oregon albacore by packaging it in pouches.

In the former Oregon Ranch Meats plant, at 723 S. Second St., Coos Bay, Babcock has built not only a canning line but a pouch packaging line. He thinks it's the world's first such packing line to specialize in albacore tuna that has been cooked just once, unlike the twice-cooked tuna typically found in cans. He's marketing his once-cooked albacore under the Sea Fare Pacific label.

Sorry, Charlie

Pouch packaging isn't so new. It's popular in Asia, and twice-cooked tuna is available on U.S. supermarket shelves from the Big Three – StarKist, Chicken of the Sea, and Bumble Bee.
