Edge Dairy Farmer Cooperative: Canada Continues to Undermine Dairy in USMCA

Edge Dairy Farmer Cooperative said today the Canadian government continues to undermine dairy provisions in the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA), and the co-op urged U.S. officials to reject Canada’s latest proposal for tariff-rate quotas (TRQs).

IDFA Rejects Canadian Announcement of USMCA Tariff Rate Quota Compliance; Urges USTR to Act Swiftly

The International Dairy Foods Association (IDFA), speaking on behalf of the full U.S. dairy supply chain, rejects the Government of Canada’s changes to how dairy tariff rate quotas (TRQs) are allocated under the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA). In December 2021, a USMCA dispute panel found Canada to be non-compliant with their dairy TRQ commitments under USMCA.

January 7, 2022 USDA,

“The U.S. Trade Representative announced that the United States has prevailed in the first dispute settlement panel proceeding under the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA). The panel agreed with the United States that Canada is unfairly restricting access to its market for U.S. dairy products by breaching its USMCA commitments regarding allocation of dairy tariff rate quotas (TRQs).”

Global Dairy Associations Applaud USMCA Report Holding Canada to its Trade Obligations

The International Dairy Foods Association (IDFA), the International Cheese Council of Canada (ICCC), the Dairy Companies Association of New Zealand (DCANZ), and Eucolait applaud the findings of the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement’s (USMCA) dispute panel on Canada’s administration of its dairy tariff rate quotas (TRQs).  The USMCA panel – the first dispute panel to be established under the Agreement – found elements of Canada’s TRQ administration to be in breach of commitments under the Agreement and has recommended Canada amend its TRQ allocation regulations consistent with USMCA.

Edge Dairy Farmer Cooperative, one of the largest dairy co-ops in the country, applauded an announcement today by U.S. Trade Representative Katherine Tai that the United States is moving forward in challenging Canada over its allocation of tariff-rate quotas for dairy products.
