Sen. Gillibrand Announces New Legislation To Include Farmed Shellfish In The Specialty Crops Services At USDA

U.S. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand, the first New Yorker to serve on the Senate Agriculture Committee in nearly 40 years, today announced new legislation to include farmed shellfish as a specialty crop. The Shellfish Marketing Assistance Fairness Act would make farmed shellfish producers eligible for the Specialty Crop Block Grant program. Currently, shellfish are ineligible for farm bill programs. However, these farmers of the sea face the same challenges as they compete with large scale operations for a share in the market. This bill would make shellfish producers eligible for federal funds for research, small business growth, and competitive marketing.

During the three-day Expo, about 80,000 health-conscious athletes and supporters had the opportunity to hear messages about the important role that lean beef plays in a heart-healthy diet. More than 27,000 of the world’s most elite athletes would be running the Boston Marathon on Monday morning and were glad to hear that lean beef was a great recovery food for after their race!

Distribution Problem Hinders Local Beef In California

The rise in consumer interest in local, sustainably raised meat has meant a world of difference for local ranchers and the restaurants and retailers that source from such operations. Many restaurants in the Bay Area, for example, proudly promote the farms and ranches they work with, and entire butcher shops have sprung up dedicated to the task of selling locally raised beef, pork, chicken, and more. Yet this is only half the story. Getting locally raised meats from the farm or ranch to the butcher shop or restaurant is a complicated logistical undertaking.
