Cake Pops: New Darlings Of The Pastry World

Move over, cupcakes. Cake pops are the new darlings of the pastry world.

Dainty, portable and easily decorated to suit the occasion, cake pops are two-bite spheres of cake on a stick. They are showing up at showers, wedding receptions, birthday parties and holiday get-togethers, always themed to the mood of the event.

“They’re really cute and it’s not like you have to eat a whole cake,” said Rochester mom Kim Litwiller, 26, who bakes for family and friends and maintains a baking blog at www.thesweetlifebakeryandsweets.blogspot.com.

Cake pops are made by mixing together frosting and crumbled cake. The dense mixture is rolled into walnut-sized balls or other shapes, skewered with a lollipop stick and dipped into melted chocolate or candy melts. Then they can be dipped into sprinkles, coconut, cocoa or chopped nuts, drizzled with icing of another color, painted or otherwise decorated.
