Victoria, BC Baker Feels Pinch As Starbucks Drops Snack

A Victoria bakery has laid off eight workers after Starbucks severed a longterm contract to supply its best-selling oat bar.

The snack was sold at hundreds of the coffee giant's 1,068 shops across Canada.

Deb Cater, owner of Cakes Etc., said her Quesnel Street bakery was making more than 7,200 oat bars a day for Starbucks until late December when the Seattle-based company informed her all freshbaked goods would be produced by a national supplier in 2012.

A Burnaby baker laid off more than 50 workers last month after its contract to make breads, scones, croissants another baked goods was also cut.
