Prices Plummet As Lobster Population Booms

Last year’s record haul of 126 million pounds, double that of just a decade ago, led some to wonder whether lobster might go the way of cheap, everyday foods like the chicken nugget or TV dinner. Prices paid to lobstermen at the dock plummeted and have not recovered. They are barely enough, says Train, to cover fuel and bait.

Bucksport, ME Lobster-Freezing Facility To Open In September

If all goes according to plan, there soon will be a new lobster-processing facility just east of the Penobscot River. In July, the city council voted unanimously to dedicate a plot of land in its industrial park to Central Maine Cold Storage. The company expects to break ground on a seafood processing facility sometime in August, according to Tony Kelley, a cold storage expert who is helping with the facility's startup.

Lobster Fishermen Question Marketing Levy

P.E.I. lobster fishermen are waiting to vote on a levy that is intended to promote their product internationally. The Lobster Council of Canada wants to collect one cent on every pound of lobster caught in Canadian waters, arguing the fee is required to market Canadian lobster on the world stage.
