Consumer Backlash Over Fonterra's 'Light-Proof' Milk Bottle

The controversial new Anchor "light-proof" milk bottle has escaped being named a finalist in worst packaging awards despite getting a record number of nominations.

Fonterra introduced the opaque plastic bottle in April, saying the new bottle maintained the milk's taste and nutritional value because clear bottles do a poor job of protecting milk.

But the new bottle caused a consumer backlash with many complaining they could not see how much milk was left in the bottle in their fridges, and raising concern over the value of the bottles to recyclers.

However, despite receiving a record 161 of the 287 nominations in the worst packaging category of the 2013 Unpackit Packaging Awards, the light-proof bottle will not be one of the eight finalists.
