The Farmer's Cow Partners With Connecticut Food Bank & TEEG To Fight Summer Hunger

Lebanon, CT – Summertime should be a time of fun, friends, and playing outdoors. However, too many children in Connecticut spend their days feeling hungry. Families who depend on school lunches to provide nutritious meals need help during the summer months when school is out. The Farmer’s Cow, a group of six Connecticut family-owned dairy farms, has answered the call to partner with Connecticut Food Bank in East Haven and TEEG in Thompson to donate milk to support summer hunger programs.

The “More Milk” email campaign from Connecticut Food Bank and The Farmer’s Cow, which began May 29 and runs through July 4, will provide up to 5,000 half gallons of fresh Connecticut milk to families in the Connecticut Food Bank service area. The more eCards sent through the More Milk campaign, the more milk that The Farmer’s Cow will donate.

To help families and children in Northeast Connecticut, The Farmer’s Cow has partnered with TEEG, a community-centered non-profit human services agency, to provide a generous supply of “calf pints” of fresh milk for the agency’s Summer Food program. Sponsored by USDA and End Hunger CT, TEEG’s Summer Food program provides valuable nutrition and a fun place for children in the community to spend time during the summer. TEEG has offered the Summer Lunch Program for the past six years, serving over 4,000 meals last year alone. This year the program will also provide breakfast as well as lunch.

“This year we anticipate even more participation,” says Diane Farquharson, TEEG Early Childhood Coordinator who manages the Summer Lunch program. “We are so fortunate to have The Farmer’s Cow step in in such a big way. The timing couldn’t be better.”

Robin Chesmer, managing member of The Farmer’s Cow adds, “The Farmer’s Cow is pleased to donate our ‘Calf Pints’ to the TEEG Summer Food Program provided to so many youth and children. Every day of the year, we feed our young calves a nutritious meal in order to keep them healthy and growing. And now, our farmers want to help make sure that children are well fed every day of the summer too! It is very rewarding to work with TEEG in providing good nutrition as well as some summer fun; The Farmer’s Cow ‘Calf Pints’ are a perfect fit.”
