Marin French Cheese Debuts Simpler Brand, Packaging

America’s longest-operating cheese company near Petaluma includes an unusual question on its website’s FAQ page: “Why does Marin French Cheese Co. have three names?”

The answer: It won’t have three for much longer.

The company, purchased two years ago by the family-owned French cheese group Rians, has unveiled new packaging that does away with a brand it has used for eight decades.

The aforementioned three names include Marin French, the company founded in 1865, and the Cheese Factory, an informal title given by locals to the company creamery on Redhill Road southwest of Petaluma. But the website notes its third name, Rouge et Noir, refers to the brand that has long been found on most of the company’s varieties of soft-ripened cheeses.
