Original Herkimer Cheese Celebrates Milestone, National Award

Original Herkimer County Cheese® is celebrating their 70th anniversary in 2019. The specialty cheese innovator and third-generation, family-owned specialty cheese manufacturer’s roots stretch back to 1949 when founder Sheldon Basloe and his wife Norma started a small mail-order gourmet cheese shop business in Herkimer, NY.

Since then the company has continued to innovate, expand and grow. Their most popular artisan cheeses include aged NY state sharp cheddar wheels and Cheese & Nut Balls and Logs, as well as unique products such as Chocolate Cheese Fudge, Pretzel Dip and Cheese & Nut Variety Circles. Recent additions to their cheese ball and log line include exciting new flavors Buffalo Blue and Beer Cheese. Their newest product line is Creamery Reserve a premium spreadable NY cheddar which is available in three varieties: Cheddar, Buffalo Blue, and Spicy Tomato.

The 70th anniversary celebration coincides with an exciting national recognition. Their flagship product CHUTTER® won bronze medal in the Cold Pack Cheese category at the 2019 US Championship Cheese Contest. CHUTTER®, a mild cheddar spread known for its rich buttery flavor and creamy smooth spreadability, rose to fame in the 1980s when it was sold at Hickory Farms kiosks and has retained a cult following ever since. A versatile product used to make everything from fondue to no-bake cheesecake, grilled cheese and more, CHUTTER® has melted the hearts of America for over 50 years.

Original Herkimer Cheese is available at fine grocery retailers nationwide and online at www.OriginalHerkimerCheese.com. Local OHC fans can shop at their retail store located at 2745 State Route 51 S in Ilion NY, as well as at the wildly popular Little Falls Cheese Festival, which seeks to highlight the region’s expansive history with the dairy industry and the diverse cheesemakers that call it home. The company plans to celebrate their 70th anniversary with a series of events throughout the year.
